PINTADO DESPERADO

By popular demand, after two years off from stud duties, Desperado stood to outside mares once again. This year we eagerly awaited the arrival of eight foals. All foals are now safely on the ground and doing well. Thankfully no one had any birth dramas and most of the foals were born early, many catching their owners by surprise. Following are photo's of each foal at one day old.

The first of Desperado's progeny this season was born on 25th October 2008. A black and white colt owned by Judy Bowen. His dam is the NZ Thoroughbred, Black Bo by Justice Prevails out of Bo Anchor.

Black Bo is a true black mare. The colt was delivered on the evening of 25th October 2008. A strong, healthy, coloured colt predominantly black with unusual white markings. 

5 Mths Old with his owner Judy. He has lost his foal coat and has a sleek summer coat with a distinctive shade of grey.

The second of Desperado's progeny to be born this season is a very cute pinto filly, Pintado Chiquita,  owned by Cecilia Fisher.

Chiquita's Dam is the Bay & White Pinto Stationbred 'Cowgirl' sired by Split Decision out of a part arab stationbred mare.

Cecilia has named her filly 'Chiquita' which is Spanish for Little one.

Chiquita has now moulted out of her foal coat and her coat is now Mahogany Bay and white but she shows the classic signs of going grey.

Edgewater Studs first Desperado Colt 'PINTADO BRAVO'

Bravo one day old,  full of curiosity

Bravo (Spanish for Brave) is the third of Desperado's foals born this season and belongs to Edgewater Stud. He is the first foal we have bred of our own since purchasing Desperado 3 years ago.

One day old

Bravo is a big strong boy who arrived at 11pm on 18th November 2008.  He is bay and white but is definitely going to turn grey as his coat is already full of grey hairs.

This colt is very bold (hence the name Bravo, spanish for brave) and the photo below shows him playing at 1 day old. This guy is not clinging to Mum's side like most new borns.

Debbi and Charelle were very fortunate to be in attendance for the entire paddock foaling and were able to record the birth from start to finish on camera. I will set up a new page called 'The Birth of a colt' shortly to display those photo's.

5 Mths Old

The fourth of Desperado's Progeny this season is Pintado Cazador (aka Pablo).

Pablo was born in broad daylight at 6.15pm on 30.11.08 and he is owned by Carolyn Wratislav.

Pablo is a Dun colt with 3 white socks and a blaze.

Pintado Cazadors Dam is the Dun mare Marakopa Magic (Maggie) by a full Clydesdale stallion out of Creamy a Palomino and white pinto Arab cross mare. Maggie is a full sister to the stallion Marakopa Captain.

Cazador is the Spanish word for Hunter and Carolyn has plans for him to be her future hunter.

This colt was purpose bred as Carolyn already owned a Pintado Desperado gelding 'Pintado Tama' (See about progeny). Her plan had been to breed a replacement for Tama as he grew old but sadly Carolyn lost her beloved Tama a few months ago due to a tragic accident. Carolyn knows first hand how safe and how well Desperado progeny jump. This is extremely important on the hunt field where difficult terrain also affects jumping performance.

The fifth of Desperado's progeny this season is a coloured filly owned by Celia Grant our studs equine vet.

The Filly's Dam, Glo, is a bright bay 1/4 Clydesdale, 3/4 Thoroughbred cross.

This is Celia's second Desperado baby. Her first, Pintado Oscana, was the only foal bred last season. Check out 2007/2008 Progeny for his latest yearling pictures.

This fillies party trick is to walk under Mum from one side to the other. I guess that won't last for long. She won't understand why she gets stuck when she grows.

Edgewater Stud's first Desperado Filly 'Pintado Estrella'.

The sixth of Desperado's progeny born this season is a Pinto Filly belonging to Edgewater Stud. Estrella made her way into the world during the night at 2.15am on 14.12.08. Her name is Spanish for Star.

Estrella appears to be either liver chestnut and white or Bay and white. At this stage it is very hard to tell as her face appears liver but her mane and tail appear black and her rump is a redish brown.

 Her Dam and Grandfather (Alibhai) are both very dark liver chestnuts with mane and tail that is nearly black with a hint of red. Estrella's Dam is a thoroughbred mare by Alibhai out of Just a Natural.

Estrella is very friendly and inquisitive.

The seventh of Desperado's progeny born this season decided to make a grand entrance into the New Year.

He was born in the early hours of New Years Day.

He is a solid coloured black colt with a white blaze showing early signs of turning grey like his Sire and famous half brother, Gandalf.

His Dam is Craighaven Harlee a black New Zealand Sporthorse by Craighaven Voila out of a half clydesdale mare by Craighaven Waingata.
