PINTADO DESPERADO

Pintado Desperado is an 18 year old, 16.2hh pinto NZ Sporthorse. He is most likely New Zealands top Pinto Sporthorse sire with one of his progeny representing NZ at the Bejiing Olympics in 2008. He has proven himself as both a competitor and as a Very successful sire.
BORN 20.09.1991
Pintado Desperado was bred by Era Bedford, of Pintado Stud in the Whakatane region. His sire was a Pinto Australian Stock horse imported from Australia by the Millington family. His lineage was 6 to 7 eighths Thoroughbred and he competed in NZ as a western and cutting horse but apparently loved to jump as well. His dam was an East coast stationbred from a long line of very good jumping horses and she also hunted and competed. Desperado was purpose bred by Era to be her future stud stallion. Era and her family gave him his basic training then he went to Colin & Toni Macintosh to be trained for his competitive career and the rest is history. Era bred progeny from a large variety of mares for many years then he was sold to Emma Kay of Titoki Stud. Emma crossed him very succesfully with a range of Thoroughbred mares. We purchased Desperado from Titoki Stud in 2005 as a riding horse but in 2007 we decided to stand him at stud in a limited capacity once again.

PINTADO DESPERADO THE COMPETITOR

Desperado & Rellz Show Hunter Kumeu 2006
Unfortunately with Charelle competeing two mares he is now being left at home much to his disgust. He loves to compete and is the first to the gate when he thinks there is a chance he may be going to a show.

Desperado has to be satisfied with local winter competition when the mares are turned out
More than just an excellent Jumping Horse, Pintado Desperado has straight movement which is more often than not passed on to his progeny - especially in those foals bred from Thoroughbred or lighter Stationbred mares. We are extremely happy with the straightness of this years foals and the Dam's are a mixture of breeds.

Charelle & Desperado leading stride of canter
Desperado has placed very well in Hunter flat classes and Hunter suitability. He has dressage points from limited outings, 18 Show Hunter Points from only three shows in his first and only Show Hunter season with Charelle, and campaigned under Toni McIntosh, Edward Bullock and Donna Smith from his first jumping lessons to Grand Prix level. He has had placings at Pony Club ODE's and has competed in Training level eventing.

Charelle & Desperado - Dressage
Desperado is a very special, fun horse who can be left in his paddock for months then be caught, saddled and hacked without any fuss. No lungeing needed for this boy before he can be mounted. He is far too polite and well mannered to buck his rider off. A few weeks fitness training and he is ready to go out and give it his best. Desperado always tries hard and gives 100%.

Desperado & Rellz - Fun Day Out Waikite ODE May 2008.
He is very prepotent passing on his jumping ability, temperament and colour from a variety of mares. We have never had Desperado fizz in any way. He takes everything in his stride. Whether it is the tiny amount of outcross from the Australian Stockhorse portion of his breeding or the New Zealand Stationbred that gives him the settled, dependable streak is anyones guess. Despite the fact that his lineage is mostly thoroughbred, even when crossed with thoroughbred mares, the progeny usually have their Sire's temperament. They are not fizzy and have a good brain with intelligence which makes them very rider friendly and trainable. The foals are all very bold and forward for their age. Our own foals have lovely natures. Naturally friendly and inquisitive and have shown no sign of dirt when being handled.

Pintado Desperado is a proven competitor and has campaigned beneath Edward Bullock and Donna Smith up to Grand Prix level.
DESPERADO THE HORSE
Desperado is so laid-back in nature he was paddocked with a 15.1hh Quarterhorse gelding for company until the gelding was sold! Whilst the two of them got up to all sorts of trouble together this was always instigated by Diego, 'Rados very mischievious little buddy.
Desperado quietly waiting to be tacked up
Unlike most Stallions 'Rado simply loves to have some company. Now we have decided to stand him again we have purchased several of our own broodmares and he enjoys the company of them for a large portion of the year.
Desperado sleeping while one of his mares stands watch
Rado is allowed to be a real horse as much as possible. He is never nasty to his mares as long as they obey the rules. He has never attempted to bite or kick his handlers and has impeccable manners at all times. He loves nothing better than a rub or groom even when loose in his paddock with the mares.
Desperado Teasing one of our TB mares loose in his paddock. We only paddock serve the best natured of our own mares due to the risk of harm to Desperado.
He is the easiest of horses to handle when hand serving. He is very smart and doesn't rush any new mare until he knows he is safe. He is very calm and quiet with any mare when hand servicing and this has been a great asset with maiden mares as he doesn't frighten them.

Desperado's calm 'TRY HARD' attitude brings a smile to Charelle's face. (Even though he wasn't very fit and somewhat overweight he gave it his very best from the minute he entered the ring) Photo taken May 2008
Desperado loves attention and is happy to leave his mares to be ridden any time whether at a show or just a romp at home. He is regularly brought in to be groomed and ridden on the property. He recently starred in a photo shoot and took it all in his stride.

Now Kirsty is home from England they spend a lot of time just hacking. Kirsty no longer wishes to compete at open level and prefers the relaxation of just being able to spend time playing at home or local low level competition. Desperado thrives on the attention. He is so quiet that Kirsty often catches him and jumps on him bareback with only his halter to bring him in to the stables or take him back to his paddock.
PINTADO DESPERADO THE SIRE
ALL PROGENY
Pintado Desperado's progeny are notably talented Jumpers; with excellent style, naturally rounded bascules, and tight knees. As you can see from the preceeding photo's , Pintado Desperado demonstrates this exceptional jumping style everytime he enters the Jump ring. Pintado Desperado's progeny have become well known for inheriting this same style.
Desperado's progeny have the ability to turn their talents to any discipline.
See 'About Pintado Desperado Progeny' for a run down on the exploits of some of the progeny I have caught up with and 'Progeny Photo Gallery' for photos of many more.
If you own a descendant of Desperado, no matter what type of riding you do, we would love to hear from you.

THE PLEASURE HORSE
Not to mention those progeny who spend their lives as pleasure horses much loved by their owners who have no inclination to compete. Desperados progeny have the perfect temperament for the casual rider who just wants to enjoy riding without the pressure of competition. The casual rider wants a horse that doesn't require to be ridden on a daily basis but one with a kind reliable disposition that makes it a pleasure to ride even after being left in the paddock for a week or two.

The Broodmare
It is only natural that some of Desperado's progeny were going to find their way to the Broodmare paddock. Breeders wanting to cross their Stallions with another top jumping line to breed the best progeny they can and also Owners wanting to breed their favourite mare.
DESPERADO's SIRE & DAM
Pintado Desperado's breeding includes famous Australian Stockhorse, Thoroughbred, and New Zealand Stationbred lines. He carries strong jumping lines from both his sire and dam.
Desperado's parents were both Pinto's but despite this he is Heterozygous for the Pinto colouring which means there is no guarantee your foal will be pinto. We breed first and foremost performance horses but if you like coloured horses and get a pinto then you have a bonus.
Sire: Dinkum Spitfire - Grey & white pinto Australian Stock Horse
Dam: Pintado Tonka - Dun & White NZ Stationbred
Desperado's sire 'Dinkum Spitfire' was imported from 'Dinkum Stud', an Australian Stock Horse Stud in Queensland. 'Dinkum Stud' is an Australian Stock Horse Heritage Stud. Dinkum Spitfire was bred by Mr Glen Gough who specialised in Australian Stock Horses for Campdraughting and Sprint racing and he was shown by Mr Vic Gough.
Vic Gough sidepassing Spitfire along a log in Australia before he was imported to NZ.
Dinkum Spitfire finished his last Australian show season as National Champion Ridden Pinto Stallion and Reserve Champion Led Pinto Stallion.
I am told by one of the importers of Dinkum Spitfire that they brought him to New Zealand to lighten the heavier type Pinto's we had in New Zealand at that time.
Dinkum Spitfire was very nearly full thoroughbred(Approx 7/8ths). Dinkum Spitfire's sire was a full thoroughbred and his Australian Pinto dam was also 3/4 thoroughbred.

Dinkum Spitfire had natural cutting ability and he also enjoyed to jump.
Dinkum Spitfire was a champion Cutting Horse.

Desperado's Dam: Pintado Tonka was a East Coast Stationbred bred from a long line of successful jumping horses.
Tonka hunted and competed in her own right.
Tonka also shows she has a great set of level knees and is tight below the knee when it comes to jumping.
Pintado Desperado is an 18 year old, 16.2HH Grey & White Tobiano Pinto who carries the greying gene.
He started his life a Black & White pinto but has progressively greyed out with age. He is now flea bitten grey and white. The following photo's show the progression from birth to his current colour status.
